Chapter 5
The Chamber of Time

But the next chamber holds something stranger than sensation.
It holds time.
Along its walls are the people you have been. The child waiting to be chosen. The young person imagining a future. The person who spoke a word that could not be taken back. The person who was loved, abandoned, praised, misunderstood.
Memory opens its doors.
The hippocampus and its relationships with other brain regions help make the past available to the present. Yet what you encounter here has the intimacy of a life: your mother’s voice, a familiar smell, the particular light in a house that no longer belongs to you.
One doorway draws you closer.
An old injury begins to speak. As attention enters it, the rest of the chamber fades. The past becomes the atmosphere of the present. You begin preparing a defense against someone who is not here.
Remain at the threshold for a moment.
You can recognize the memory while feeling its force. The scene is occurring within awareness. It has depth, urgency, and meaning, but you can remain aware of its presence.
A passage opens beside it.
You continue inward.
A distinction becomes visible as we walk.
You can direct attention toward a memory while becoming entirely absorbed in it. You can also recognize that remembering is taking place. In the first movement, the story supplies the world. In the second, the story itself becomes known within a wider field.
The difference is subtle enough to be missed even during meditation. A person may close their eyes and spend the whole session revisiting a grievance. Inwardness has become another room in which the grievance can rehearse.
The next doorway opens when the activity is recognized: remembering, fearing, planning, defending. The name can be useful, but the living recognition is what matters.
The temple has begun to reveal the difference between its inhabitants and the awareness through which they are encountered.
Teresa of Ávila called the soul an interior castle. She described people living around its outer walls while remaining unaware of the dwelling places within. Here, passing through the chambers of your own experience, her image becomes almost tangible. You have inhabited this house for years. There are rooms into which you are only now learning to enter.
