Chapter 16

The Holy of Holies

The veil opens.

In the biblical sanctuary, the innermost chamber held the ark, and the space above its cover, between the cherubim, was named as a place of meeting. The architecture led toward encounter.

We have reached that inward place.

In the spiritual geography of the brain, this is the Holy of Holies: the Godward place, the sanctuary of awareness where the connection between human consciousness and divine consciousness becomes the center of attention.

To enter and live from this sanctuary is The Godward Way.

For the whole journey, consciousness has been occupied by what passes through it. Here it attends to its relationship with the Source from whom its life is received.

What is observed is the connection itself: the human capacity to know, to receive, and to offer, turned toward the divine consciousness in which creation has its origin.

The Father remains beyond the images through which the mind has tried to contain Him.

There is no need to place an imagined face upon the ark. No figure has to appear between the wings. The meeting does not require a picture of its recipient.

The sanctuary is opened through orientation.

Human consciousness is here, awake to what moves within it. Its intention is Godward. The relationship becomes the living center from which experience is received.

This directed attention is kavanah.

The whole journey has brought us to the possibility of being inwardly present to an address.

The word of prayer may not yet have formed. Before the mouth says “Father,” the heart may already have turned. Before a request becomes a sentence, a willingness to receive may already be alive.
