Chapter 13

The Pineal Gate

2 min · Adam G.

Near the center of the brain lies the pineal gland, long associated in philosophical imagination with the meeting of soul and body. Descartes gave it a special place in that relationship. Its bodily work with melatonin participates in the rhythms of light and darkness.

In the sacred landscape of our journey, it becomes a marker of the passage from outward daylight toward inward illumination.

We pause beside this small, pine-cone-shaped organ.

The brain has several structures along its midline; the pineal’s particular history has made it one of the most symbolically charged. It participates in the body’s response to the light-dark cycle through melatonin.

Mineral deposits can also occur within it. These have been called brain sand. Their presence is a bodily finding, not a measure of the depth of a person’s prayer.

The stone at the foot of Jacob’s ladder returns to our imagination. Inward hardness can become an image for an attention that has lost its flexibility. The symbol invites an opening in how we live, without turning the person into the diagnosis of a gland.

Researchers have also described calcite microcrystals in human pineal tissue. Such structures inspire comparisons with crystals used in technology. A physical crystal, however, does not by its presence alone establish a receiver of spiritual signals.

The inward antenna belongs here as a metaphor for receptivity.

An invention may seem to arrive before its maker can explain the path by which it came. Music may be present inwardly before it is written. A relationship may become clear before the mind can divide the understanding into sentences.

The mystery is worth entering without supplying it with a manufactured quotation from an inventor or composer.

The name DMT also appears in modern discussions of visionary experience and molecules produced within the body. A chemical state can alter what is experienced. Divine consciousness, in the spiritual vision of this journey, remains greater than any one chemical condition.

The gate we are seeking concerns our relation to experience itself.

A light appears. A vibration is felt. Pressure gathers between the brows. These may become vivid when attention grows concentrated. Each belongs to the field being known.

Their intensity gives them no automatic right to become the center of the temple.
