Discernment and Common Difficulties

2 min · Adam G.

The mind keeps speaking. Let speech be recognized within awareness. Every thought need not receive a reply. Return to the direct experience of the chosen state, already Godward.

The body will not relax. Allow the tension to be present without requiring it to disappear before the practice can begin. Feel the body’s actual support. Shorten the sitting if needed. The body can participate without being forced.

A strong emotion arises. Receive and offer it in the same movement. A chosen orientation does not depend on having only pleasant emotions. Let attention remain capable of meeting what is here.

You cannot find a special field of consciousness. Notice the knowing already present while you read or listen. The attempt to find a spectacular inner location can itself be offered.

You start constructing scenes. Recognize the picture. Let it pass into the offering, and receive actual sensation again. Re-enter the manner of being the picture was meant to represent.

You begin repeating a phrase. Allow the phrase to indicate its meaning, then let it fall quiet. Rest in what its meaning opens. The protocol trains direct inhabiting rather than verbal rehearsal.

You feel spiritually advanced. Offer the pleasure and the new identity together. Return to the nakedness that made the practice possible.

You worry that a wandering thought has ruined everything. Offer the worry. A passing thought is an occasion to return. The practice does not require fear of one’s own mind.

A desire becomes urgent and unquestionable. Pause before giving it more attention. Offer the demand to possess that outcome. Notice what remains when the desired identity is no longer permitted to hold the center.

You become absorbed in unusual sensations. Receive them as experiences. Let curiosity, excitement, and interpretation be offered too. A vivid experience can be allowed to pass without becoming an instruction.

You feel increasingly detached from ordinary surroundings. Open your eyes, move, notice the room, and pause the sitting. Return to familiar activity and human contact. A practice of presence should remain connected to ordinary life.

You cannot sustain the state all day. Begin again at the next natural transition. Stability develops through repeated return. Let patience become part of the quality being practiced.
